Ellen H. Clapsaddle was a prolific artist whose work appears on countless postcards. Her holiday images captivate me; however, her work has been marred by faded colors, specks, holes, scratches and deteriorating paper. Since there is no longer a copyright on the original cards, I decided to restore some luster to my collection of the fading graphics, most of which were postmarked from 1909-1922. [See examples below.] I designed the frames and this web set to showcase some of my favorite Thanksgiving greetings.

[While I haven't made significant changes in most of the edited postcards that follow, I confess that the little cook and the little chef now bear the faces of my granddaughter Chloe and grandson Justin.  BBR]

Enjoy the postcards and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Lyrics to the 16th century Dutch melody:

We gather together
to ask the Lord's blessing;
he chastens and hastens
his will to make known.
The wicked oppressing
now cease from distressing.
Sing praises to his name,
he forgets not his own.

Beside us to guide us,
our God with us joining,
ordaining, maintaining
his kingdom divine;
so from the beginning
the fight we were winning;
thou, Lord, wast at our side,
all glory be thine!

We all do extol thee,
thou leader triumphant,
and pray that thou still
our defender wilt be.
Let thy congregation
escape tribulation;
thy name be ever praised!
Lord, make us free!
